West Huntsville This Fall: The Last Outdoor Market, a Cinema in Limbo, and Lowe Mill's Countdown to the Solstice

Lowe Mill's Saturday Outdoor Market has run every week since April 4, and its last date of 2026 is October 24. The season doesn't wind down after that. It moves inside the mill and gathers around a few busy dates, while Stovehouse on Governors Drive covers most weeknights between them. If you live in the 35805, the useful way to plan the next ten weeks is by date.

October 24 is the busiest day on the calendar

October 24 has more going on at Lowe Mill than any other day this fall. Here is what the Lowe Mill event directory lists for that Saturday:

Time Event Location Price
11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Outdoor Market, final date of 2026 Lowe Mill A&E Grounds No price listed
11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Halloween Photos, walk-ins welcome Sunshine Images, Studio 2005 $25
2 to 3 p.m. Let's Draw! Pumpkin Edition charcoal class Yuri Ozaki, Studio 310 $27
2 to 3:30 p.m. Bowery at Midnight, 1942, with Bela Lugosi The Independent, Studio 150 $8
4 to 6 p.m. Pet Sematary, 1989 The Independent, Studio 150 $12
7 to 11 p.m. Halloween Dance Party First Floor Connector $15 to $20

You can fill a whole day here. Shop the last market vendors in the morning, catch a matinee or a drawing class after lunch, and come back that night for the dance party. Two of the six listings sit in Studio 150, though, and that room's status is the one real question mark of the season.

The Independent's October listings are still up

On July 28, 2026, WHNT reported that The Independent Cinema would not renew its Lowe Mill lease at the end of September and that its last day of operations would be September 12. In the announcement, the theater said "there just hasn't been enough interest to sell enough tickets to stay afloat." It also said it planned to look for ways to carry on its legacy after a break. AL.com reported the same timeline.

Even so, the Lowe Mill calendar still lists October programming under The Independent's name at Studio 150. The lineup includes:

  • The Independent Presents R&B Night, October 22, 7 to 8:30 p.m., $20
  • Pet Sematary, October 23, 7 to 9 p.m., and again October 24, 4 to 6 p.m., $12
  • Bowery at Midnight, October 24, 2 to 3:30 p.m., $8
  • A laserdisc evening curated by David from Big Mix

The Pet Sematary and Bowery at Midnight listings link to ticket pages on The Independent's own website, which gives the venue as Lowe Mill, 2211 Seminole Drive SW. The R&B Night ticket link goes to a FOMO Events page that names the venue "The Independent at Lowe Mill."

No follow-up news says the lease changed, that a new operator took over, or that the cinema reopened. All anyone can say for sure is that October events are being listed and ticketed under The Independent's name. For any Studio 150 show on your calendar, check the ticket page the day before you go.

The week before Halloween stacks up on both sides of Governors

October 24 caps a week with something nearly every night. City recreation centers and Stovehouse add to the Lowe Mill dates.

  1. Tuesday, October 20. Trivia Tuesday at Stovehouse, Disney Movies theme.
  2. Wednesday, October 21. The Huntsville Traditional Music Association presents The Po-Boys New Orleans Sound in Studio 1038 at Lowe Mill, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., $15 to $20. Across town, the weekly Stovehouse Dueling Pianos night features Otis Walker and Lisa Chang.
  3. Thursday, October 22. Boo Bash at Brahan Spring Recreation Center, 5 to 7:30 p.m. The City of Huntsville says its October Halloween events are free. That evening, Stovehouse hosts Singo Music Bingo with line dance songs, and R&B Night plays at Studio 150.
  4. Friday, October 23. Pet Sematary at Studio 150, 7 p.m.
  5. Saturday, October 24. The full Lowe Mill lineup above.

Halloween week is packed too. Witches Day is Lowe Mill's annual free celebration, held on the Thursday before Halloween, which this year is October 29, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. That evening, Stovehouse runs Singo Music Bingo with Halloween songs from 7 to 9 p.m. On Friday, October 30, West Huntsville Recreation Center hosts STEM-O-WEEN from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Halloween itself has a daytime event and a late-night one. Lowe Mill hosts Trick or Treat from 1 to 3 p.m. Stovehouse holds Zombie Prom 2026 from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m., with live music followed by a DJ dance party. You can see the full city list on the Huntsville Parks & Recreation Halloween lineup.

November thins out, then comes back on the 21st

The calendar is quieter in November. The Stovehouse events page lists the AMPLIFIED Open Mic on November 4 and an I LOVE R&B PARTY at The Electric Belle on November 13. Neither of those listings gives a start time, so check before you head out.

Saturday, November 21 is Lowe Mill's next busy date. The fall Open Studio Night runs from 5 to 7 p.m., and Lowe Mill says more than 150 studio doors will be open. Earlier that day, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., the mill hosts the Gobble Gobble Hey! Zine and Small Press Fest. November 21 is also the last day of the current gallery round, which opened September 2. Galleries are open Wednesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. If you haven't seen this round yet, plan to see it before or during Open Studio Night.

Three nights later, on Tuesday, November 24, Black Stone Cherry plays Bonfire Nights: An Acoustic Evening at The Electric Belle. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show starts at 8.

December runs on two Lowe Mill Saturdays

The Stovehouse calendar showed no December events when we checked. Listings may still be added, but right now Lowe Mill is the only venue on this list with December dates posted.

  • Saturday, December 5. Yule Y'all Christmas Market and Spirit Sampling, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. The water tower lighting is at 5 p.m. If you want to see the lighting, come late in the day.
  • Saturday, December 19. Winter Solstice Market, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The building itself stays open until 7 p.m. that day. That leaves three hours after the market closes to walk the studios.

The Solstice Market is the last date on this fall's Lowe Mill calendar.

What to eat between events

The newest food option at the mill is JAC's Barbecue in studio 1029. It opened in June 2026, and the Huntsville/Madison County Convention & Visitors Bureau describes it as a barbecue spot by culinary artist James Cutts that grew out of a catering business. It specializes in turkey dishes, with sides like baked beans, mac and cheese and collard greens. If you're spending a long Saturday at the mill, like October 24 or December 5, you can eat lunch without leaving the building.

Campus No. 805 on Clinton Avenue West has its usual tenants, including Straight To Ale, Yellowhammer Brewing, Ale's Kitchen and Lone Goose Saloon. We couldn't confirm any Campus No. 805 fall events, so it isn't on the calendar above. It's still close by for dinner after a Lowe Mill afternoon.

Before you go

  • After the Outdoor Market ends on October 24, plan on indoor events at Lowe Mill.
  • Check the ticket page the day before any Studio 150 screening. The Independent announced a September 12 closing, and no report since then says that changed.
  • Many Stovehouse listings for trivia, Singo, open mic and party nights have no start time, so check the listing before you leave home.
  • The city's Halloween events at Brahan Spring Recreation Center on October 22 and West Huntsville Recreation Center on October 30 are free.
  • Open Studio Night on November 21 is also the last day of the current gallery round.

As you plan these weekends, you may also be thinking about next year, like whether to list in the spring or which projects to finish over the winter. Sheryl Schettinger can help you put those dates on the calendar now so the timeline stays manageable. Schedule a free consultation.
