From late October through December, Monte Sano is busy right above Blossomwood, but you can't just drive up and join most of it. The evening programs at Burritt on the Mountain are ticketed, and some are already sold out. The state park's night hikes and folklore talks need registration. Even the weekend craft classes at Burritt are filling up. Only three events on the calendar let you show up without a plan, and one of the best things on the mountain this season, the paved Tollgate Greenway, isn't on any calendar.
The days you can simply show up
Burritt's fall and holiday calendar has three open-door events, and they fall about a month apart.
| Date | Event | Hours on the calendar | Ticket note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Saturday, October 31 | Boo at Burritt | 1 to 4 p.m. | No admission price listed |
| Saturday, November 7 | Round Top Folk Festival | 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. | No ticket link listed |
| December 5 and 6 | Merriment on the Mountain | All day | No admission price listed |
November 7 is the fullest day of the three. Burritt has added a ticketed Round Top Brunch from 10 to 11:30 a.m., priced $12 to $30, and a Round Top Happy Hour Concert from 4 to 6 p.m. with the Otis Walker Band. That turns the festival into a full day if you want it: an optional brunch reservation in the morning, the festival through the day, then live music as the light goes.
Boo at Burritt on Halloween afternoon finishes at 4 p.m., which leaves Halloween evening open for the neighborhood. Merriment on the Mountain is the only one of the three that runs two days in a row, so it's the easiest to fit around a busy December weekend.
Nearly everything else on the mountain this season needs a ticket or a registration, starting with the evenings.
After dark, everything takes a reservation
As the days get shorter, the mountain's programs move into the evening, and each evening event left this fall needs advance booking. Here they are in date order, starting the day after this post goes up:
- Friday, October 23, 6 to 8 p.m.: Haunted Mansion Dinner at Burritt, $90.
- Friday, October 23, 7 p.m.: Fantastic Folklore of Appalachia at Monte Sano State Park.
- Tuesday, October 27, 6 to 8 p.m.: Haunted Mansion Dinner at Burritt, $90. Burritt's calendar already showed this one as sold out.
- Thursday, October 29, 5 to 7 p.m.: Legends and Libations Historic Park Tour at Burritt.
- Friday, November 6, 6 p.m.: Guided Night Hike, Owl Prowl, at Monte Sano State Park.
- December 10 to 12 and December 17 to 19, dinner service from 6 p.m.: Holiday Magic 2026 at Burritt, a five-course dinner at $165 per person.
October 23 is the busiest date on the list. Burritt's dinner starts at 6, the park's folklore program starts at 7, and the Land Trust of North Alabama also holds Creekin' with Kayla at Monte Sano Nature Preserve that morning, 9:30 to 11 a.m., with a repeat session on October 24. If you want two of those, pick now and register.
The November 6 Owl Prowl starts half an hour earlier than the October 16 session did, which had a 6:30 p.m. start. Look at the start time when you register instead of assuming it matches the last one.
Daytime state park programs work the same way. Each one on the Monte Sano State Park events page goes through a registration link, including:
- Junior Ranger: Nature Journaling 101, Friday, November 13, 2 p.m.
- Stone Cuts Guided Hike, Saturday, November 21, at 10 a.m. and again at 2 p.m.
- Monte Sano Trail Mingle, Friday, December 4, 11 a.m.
- Monte Sano is for the Dogs Hike: Howliday Themed Edition, Friday, December 4, 2 p.m.
- The Mountain of Health Stroll, Saturday, December 19, 11 a.m.
Burritt's daytime maker classes are filling up too. On November 21, the calendar lists Blacksmithing: Letter Opener for $135, which already showed as sold out, plus Fiber Arts: "Crochet Snowflakes" and Glass: "Fused Glass Ornaments" for $70. The November 28 session of Fused Glass Ornaments was also sold out, and so was the November 10 Weekday Series: Stained Glass Angel. Because the holiday-themed classes are going first, anyone hoping to make a handmade ornament this year has fewer dates left than the calendar suggests.
Ticket availability changes from day to day, so check Burritt's calendar before you plan around a date.
The walk that's on no calendar
The Tollgate Greenway is what fills the open days between all those booked dates. It's also the newest piece of the mountain, and this is its first fall.
The Land Trust of North Alabama held the opening ceremony at Bankhead Trailhead on April 27, 2026. The greenway is a 1.2-mile paved, multi-use trail that follows part of the historic Toll Gate Road. It runs from Bankhead Trailhead up to the closed section of Bankhead Parkway, along the western slope of the mountain.
From the trailhead it's a 2.4-mile round trip with an uphill grade, and WHNT lists the trailhead parking lot at 2442 Bankhead Parkway NE. Walkers and cyclists can connect to High Trail along the way.
Fall is a good time to try it because of how the Land Trust built it. The trail is paved and shaded, with benches all along the route, so it works for walkers who can't manage a natural-surface trail or don't want to.
The greenway took a while to build. The Land Trust started a fundraising campaign in 2023 and reached its $500,000 goal after 14 months, ahead of an October 2024 deadline. The City of Huntsville matched it with another $500,000. Construction began in September 2025, and the trail opened less than a year later.
On an open afternoon with nothing booked, you can walk up and back at your own pace without a reservation or a start time.
Coming back down to Five Points
Several of the evenings above end in time for a late dinner, and the closest dinner option to the base of the mountain is new this year.
Good Company Cafe opened its Five Points location at 720 Pratt Ave. NE this summer. By early July, AL.com reported it was in soft opening, with a table-service dinner room planned next door. The restaurant's own site now calls that room Etta's Tavern. It lists dinner starting at 5 p.m., happy hour Tuesday through Friday from 3 to 6 p.m., and takes dinner reservations. According to 256 Today, the space used to be 1892 East, which closed in May 2025.
The timing works with Burritt's schedule. Legends and Libations ends at 7 p.m. on October 29, and the November 7 happy hour concert ends at 6 p.m. Either one leaves time for dinner on Pratt without a rushed drive.
Two doors down, Cocoa Bama, a locally owned chocolate shop at 716 Pratt Avenue NE, announced in July that it was open. Stop in for a box on the way to Holiday Magic, or on the way home from Merriment on the Mountain.
